The Problem

Right now the Great Barrier Reef and our climate are at risk from plans to build a mega coal port in Reef waters, just 50km from the picturesque Whitsunday Islands.

All this to extract millions of tonnes of coal from the Galilee Basin, one of the world’s largest coal deposits, which when burned would result in more annual carbon pollution than Canada. This would  tip us over critical tipping points for our climate.

To make matters worse, it will destroy the Great Barrier Reef Reef World Heritage Area, through dredging, dumping, and increased shipping when this precious icon is protected under international law.

How far we've come

We’ve been campaigning on the Reef for a few years now, and our power is building. This project has faced numerous setbacks and delays, thanks to the incredible work of everyday people across the Australia and the world. In the next few months, this campaign could win or lose, but with your help, we can make sure this project doesn’t go ahead.

Adani has been trying to get this project off the ground for five years, at the same time the world has moved on from fossil fuels, the Pope has declared climate change to be one of the world’s biggest issues and the G7 (the world’s biggest economic superpowers) have decided that it’s time to phase out fossil fuels.

This campaign could be won or lost by September.

Why this project doesn't make sense

A recent Essential Poll found that 63% of Australians disapprove of their bank helping to finance coal port expansion on the Great Barrier Reef, 19% don’t know. Additionally, another 82% of Australians think that banks should consider the social and environmental impacts of projects they fund compared to only 5% who believe they should only consider profits.

This is telling. No bank wants their brand associated with Reef destruction. Plans to build mega coal ports on the Reef, just 50km from the Whitsundays will mean thousands of coal ships and reparable damage to the Great Barrier Reef.

About the AYCC

This campaign is being led by the Australian Youth Climate Coalition (AYCC), in partnership with organisations large and small from across the country.

The AYCC is one of Australia’s largest youth-run organisations, with more than 100,000 members.  We educate, inspire, and empower young people to take action on climate change.

We recognise that to address climate change, Australia must move beyond coal and gas and instead focus on investing in powering our economy by clean, renewable energy. This includes ensuring that our national treasure, the Great Barrier Reef, doesn’t get turned into the world’s biggest coal port.

In 2014 we successfully called on one of Australia's biggest construction companies, Lend Lease, to publicly rule out involvement in Abbot Point.
